Starting in 2025, Massachusetts boat owners must comply with new Hanson Milone Act Safety regulations.

Who Needs a Certificate?

• Born after January 1, 1989: Must obtain a certificate by April 1, 2026.

• Born on or before January 1, 1989: Must obtain a certificate before April 1, 2028.

SBYC is coordinating with Beverly-Marblehead to offer a class at SBYC to obtain a safety certificate that complies with regulatory requirements.

• Class: 5 Tuesday nights - May 27th to June 24th from 6-8 pm

• Exam: The final evening will be a proctored exam

• Cost: $60 per attendee

  • Cost for additional family member attendees is $35 and does NOT include study materials

• Attendance is capped at 30

Sign-up Requirements:

• No one under the age of 12 can take the course.

• Anyone under 18 must have a parent/guardian co-sign the form

• This Certificate course is accepted by all 50 states and meets state licensing requirements including the Massachusetts State Environmental Police for power and required for boat and PWC operators between 12 and 17.  

• Graduates get a wallet sized card attesting to the fact they have passed the NASBLA approved safe boating course
